A biomimetic redox flow battery based on flavin mononucleotide

چکیده
The versatility in design of redox flow batteries makes them apt to efficiently store energy in large-scale applications at low cost. The discovery of inexpensive organic electroactive materials for use in aqueous flow battery electrolytes is highly attractive, but is thus far limited. Here we report on a flow battery using an aqueous electrolyte based on the sodium salt of flavin mononucleotide. Flavins are highly versatile electroactive molecules, which catalyse a multitude of redox reactions in biological systems. We use nicotinamide (vitamin B3) as a hydrotropic agent to enhance the water solubility of flavin mononucleotide. A redox flow battery using flavin mononucleotide negative and ferrocyanide positive electrolytes in strong base shows stable cycling performance, with over 99% capacity retention over the course of 100 cycles. We hypothesize that this is enabled due to the oxidized and reduced forms of FMN-Na being stabilized by resonance structures.

Integration of a Vanadium Redox Flow Battery with a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell as an Energy Storage System
The proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell is a green energy producer which converts chemical energy to electricity in high yield. Alternatively, the vanadium redox flow battery (VRB) is one of the best rechargeable batteries because of its capability to average loads and output power sources. These two systems are modeled by Nernst equation and electrochemical rules. An effective energy gene...
متن کاملFlavins contained in yeast extract are exploited for anodic electron transfer by Lactococcus lactis.
Cyclic voltammograms of yeast extract-containing medium exhibit a clear redox peak around -0.4V vs. Ag|AgCl. Fermentative bacterium Lactococcus lactis was hereby shown to exploit this redox compound for extracellular electron transfer towards a graphite anode using glucose as an electron donor. High performance liquid chromatography revealed that this may be a flavin-type compound. The ability ...
متن کاملSimultaneous Control of Active and Reactive Powers of Vanadium Redox Flow Battery Systems in Flexible Microgrids
This paper discusses the control of flexible microgrids, consisting of a Redox Flow Batteries (RFB) and a new power conditioning system (PCS) for the RFB. Considering the importance of energy storage, this study is essential in power systems that are developed cautiously. RFB is connected to power system by a DC/DC or DC/AC converter to produce a DC voltage. It is very important that this conve...
متن کاملStructural basis for the electron transfer from an open form of NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase to heme oxygenase.
NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase (CPR) supplies electrons to various heme proteins including heme oxygenase (HO), which is a key enzyme for heme degradation. Electrons from NADPH flow first to flavin adenine dinucleotide, then to flavin mononucleotide (FMN), and finally to heme in the redox partner. For electron transfer from CPR to its redox partner, the ''closed-open transition'' of CPR i...
متن کاملRatiometric detection of enzyme turnover and flavin reduction using rare-earth upconverting phosphors.
Gd4O2S:Yb:Tm rare-earth upconversion phosphors have been utilised to monitor the redox behaviour of flavin mononucleotide and report on the turnover of a flavo-protein, (pentaerythritol tetranitrate reductase). The presence of two bands separated by over 300 nm in the UCP emission spectra allows ratiometric signalling of these processes with high sensitivity.
